World Affairs for 2015 JULY II

20th July 2015 (jandmayers twitter)

“Taiwan is poised to elect its first female leader”

“The two main political parties have nominated women in next January’s Presidential Elections”

“Hung Hsiu-chu 67 is a former teacher and has a fiery style. She is known as “Little Hot Pepper””

“She was selected on Sunday as the candidate for the ruling Nationalist Party (KMT)”

“Hung will compete against Tsai Ing-wen 58 the candidate for the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)”

“Tsai is already the party’s chairwoman”

“She is a trained lawyer who studied at The London School of Economics before forging ahead with a career in politics back home”

“The battle between the two women will bring forth a new understanding of true democracy”

“Hung has a mountain to climb if she is to win over enough votes to self-rule this island of 18 million voters to defeat Tsai”

“It was Tsai who narrowly lost the 2012 election”

“Tsai Ing-wen is the front runner and she is ahead of all the polls so far”

“Hung’s KMT party has ruled Taiwan since 2008 and badly lost in last November’s local elections”

“China’s Communist leaders view Taiwan as a renegade province that should be re-unified with mainland China”

“It is the Taiwanese people who have a growing unease with China”

“They are not happy with the way China has handled their hard-line response to the prodemocracy movement demonstrations in Hong Kong”

“Since 2012, public opinion has now become more cautious about the risks on integration with China”

“What is so wonderful right now is that Taiwan has become the latest in a series of nations wanting to elect female leaders”

“They follow Thailand, the Philippines and South Korea”

“China on the other hand has not a single woman in the Communist party’s elite”

“Taiwan has two female Presidential candidates, which shows the role of women in Taiwanese politics”

“They also have more female legislators”

“This has occurred as a gradual process over two and a half decades since democratisation”

“Together with a strong woman’s movement being one factor and a well-educated population with favourable institutions”

“Women no longer see politics as a barrier”

“They are able to forge ahead where they feel the need is there for them to voice their opinions”

“If more women were able to enter politics, there would be less wars and less mismanagement of nations”

“They are, after all, the basis for all life and should be considered as such!”

“The situation in Iran over its sanctions and the relief that now comes from the deal on their nuclear agenda by the P5+1 Agreement means…”

“…Iran can become a world power again”

“Suppression by US sanctions and the cloak and dagger approach by Israel to quash all deals concerning Iran are now being limited”

“Although Israel will try to fight the Vienna Agreement in Congress, it will fail substantially”

“America and the Middle East needs stability”

“They need a power that is able to sort out the American mess, which America can no longer do”

“America is tired of war and its policies have brought disorder and chaos, not only to the Middle East, but to the world at large”

“America needs Iran as never before to build up new policies with its neighbours and to find out a legal way to oust out IS”

“It is no longer a question of fighting IS on the ground, they are too powerful just now”

“It is necessary for the Arab States to put behind them their fears and to put together a collaboration to deal with IS on their terms”

“Israel will see themselves further isolated and where they feel they hold all the cards on their terms”

“Slowly they will see those slipping away from them”

“Israel, the bad man in this pack of thieves, will have to humble itself”

“On their knees to a different dictate over and above their own, which they have enjoyed for decades”

“The American people will ask for results from the Iran deal and, where Obama has the momentum, they will see sense”

“The people will continue questioning until Congress has to put down its guns and seen sense”

“Iran is needed to broker deals with the Saudis in order for a more positive move to embrace stability in the region”

“This is no longer about Shias against Sunnis, but about common sense becoming the bigger picture here”

“A new dialogue, which will incorporate Iraq at the centre of negotiations…”

“…will establish a drive through operation to deal with extremists as never before”

“Turkish Kurds will also be in attendance, as their forces have already taken more of the force”

“They know what needs to be done to deal with this common enemy, IS”

“America needs to understand the backlash that they have caused by recruiting IS in the first place”

“They now reap what they have sown and so must now place their support in Iran to save the day”

“Not only for the Middle East, but for the world at large”

“Israel will remain on the backburner and they won’t be consulted in any form of negotiations”

“They too have done enough damage in the Middle East by their own agendas and so they will be silenced whether they like it or not!”

“See Saudi Arabia deal tactically with Iran on a number of strategic issues and where their disagreements will not be an issue”

“But where the greater cause will be instead!”

“The art of Social Media shows that nobody can get away with anything anymore”

“In this case a Cambodian property tycoon has been exposed for assaulting a well-known Cambodian actress”

“Sok Bun has appeared in court after the actress posted a video of her attack online”

“The CCTV footage taken at the time of the assault on Ek Socheata, better known as SaSa, on the video in the capital Phnom Penh”

“Sok Bun, 37 years old, returned to Cambodia from Singapore, where he had fled”

“Violence against women in Cambodia is commonplace, but when the people were shown the exposure of the attack it sparked outrage”

“Sok Bun was arrested at Phnom Penh’s airport by Cambodia’s Prime Minister, who called for his arrest”

“He stated, “Don’t think because you have money, you can escape.  What you have done is intolerable”

“The video footage shows SaSa being dragged off a chair onto the floor of a Japanese restaurant”

“She was then kicked in the head & as she tried to get up she was punched & stamped on. All this continued for over a minute”

“There was a point when Mr Bun’s bodyguard pointed a gun at SaSa’s head as the attack continued”

“Finally a restaurant worker pulls off her attacker”

“It was the restaurant who gave SaSa the video and then she later posted it on her Facebook page, her black eye visibly shown”

“Mr Bun pulled SaSa’s hair and smashed her head against the floor”

“SaSa said she was simply protecting her friend against the unwanted advances of Sok Bun”

“The bodyguard has been charged with attempted murder, as he pulled the trigger of his gun at SaSa’s head”

“But the trigger failed to discharge. He is still at large”

“Cambodia’s Prime Minister issued the arrest and if Sok Bun is found guilty he could face up to five years in prison”

“As more exposure to these types of crimes becomes relevant it begins to show that those who commit them can no longer hide behind innocence”

“The truth must expose these thugs whose will they subject on others, simply because they feel they can”

“Justice is finally catching them in the act”

“They are now reaping the results of their actions”

“America needs a stable ally and Iran could well be that political stabilising influence, which the US needs right now”

“This nuclear deal has to be forged ahead to bring about stability in this highly volatile region”

“Dubai is a city, which quietly tolerates other faiths”

“The rulers of Dubai have ensured that people of different faiths are able to worship in Dubai”

“Dubai has a Roman Catholic Church of St Mary”

“In 1966, the year oil was discovered, Sheikh Rashid donated a piece of land to a Roman Catholic mission”

“Sunday is a busy day in Dubai, so Mass is conducted on Fridays. For many this is their only day off”

“Churches including St Mary’s hold dozens of services in English, Arabic and the languages of Tagalog to Malayalam”

“Father Connully says Catholics come mainly from India and the Philippines. He gets around 7,000 people for Friday Mass”

“Dubai’s current ruler permitted a Hindu temple to be built, so that thousands of Hindus and Sikhs can worship”

“As one moves around Dubai there is no evidence of any religion other than Islam”

“Churches are not allowed to display crosses or preach publicly or try to persuade Muslims to convert”

“That would incorporate a jail sentence and deportation”

“All this is accepted, for it is the freedom for private worship that is so important here”

“Dubai has a multi-cultural aspect and it gives people the respect and courtesy to worship in peace”

“It clearly works and shows that people of different faiths can live and work alongside each other in peace and harmony”

“One must always respect the values of the host nation for this to happen”

“Dubai can be an example to the rest of the world”

“They know that there is nothing to fear when different faiths are able to worshiped on the same day”

“The Srebrenica massacre, also known as the Srebrenica genocide, was the genocidal killing in July 1995 of more than 8,000 Bosniaks”

“They were mainly men and boys”

“This all happened around the town of Srebrenica during the Bosnian War”

“The killing was done by units of the Army of Republika Srpska”

“Their commander was General Ratko Mladic, who is in The Hague for war crimes”

“The Secretary General of the United Nations described the mass murder as the worst crime on European soil since the Second World War”

“A paramilitary unit from Serbia participated in the massacre”

“In 2004 a unanimous ruling by the International Criminal Tribunal of the former Yugoslavia located in The Hague ruled this was a massacre”

“The massacre of the male inhabitants constituted genocide, a crime under International Law”

“This ruling was upheld by the International Court of Justice in 2007”

“There was also a forcible transfer of 25,000–30,000 Bosniak women, children and the elderly, which accompanied the massacre”

“In July 2012, some 6,838 genocide victims have been identified by DNA analysis on body parts”

“These have now been recovered and put into mass graves”

“In July 2013, some 6,066 victims have now been buried at the Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial Centre and Cemetery”

“Russia has recently vetoed a UN resolution stating it was genocide”

“However Members of the European Parliament and the House of Representatives of the US Congress unanimously have adopted its resolution”

“This was to adopt this crime in Srebrenica to be defined as genocide”

“Until the Serbian Prime Minister comes to terms with what has happened by his own countrymen in these horrific crimes…”

“…there can be no healing established in this country”

“The Serbian Government has to admit that it was a genocide, however harsh that might seem to them”

“The truth is there continuously in their faces”

“Some twenty years down the road nothing much has changed to alleviate the sufferings of these Bosniak people”

“Fourteen individuals have already been convicted at a UN Tribunal in The Hague in relations to these killings”

“Ratko Mladic and a former Bosnian Serb army Chief Radovan Karadzic are on trial for these massacres”

“Until proper justice is being seen to be done, nothing can eradicate the stain of their crimes from their hands and from their history!”
